“Let’s discuss the number one reason I virtually quit social media entirely.”
It is not that social media is bad. It is that the costs outweigh the benefits for most people.
What are the top 5 benefits of social media?
If you are struggling to name even 2 or 3, then you are in the right place.
Here are 5 benefits to consider if you cannot think of any:
Keeping up with family members you like
Seeing what friends are up to
Sharing good memories
Marketing a business
Connecting with like-minded strangers
Before you convince yourself to leave this page and check your IG, consider the costs of social media:
Keeping up with family members who are toxic
Seeing what friends are up and feeling jealous or insecure
Refreshing bad memories
Being judged by strangers
Literally every item on the list of benefits has a flipside. Except for marketing a business, but more on that later. Here are more cons:
Less enjoyment while eating. Yes, research actually shows that people who take and post pictures of their food actually enjoy it less than people who just eat it. Plus, let’s be honest and admit that unless you are a food critic, probably nobody cares what you ate for lunch.
Body image issues
Buying stupid stuff you saw while scrolling. Yeah, you know that one thing that looked awesome? Then it shipped 12 weeks later and was not what the video showed.
Let's discuss the number one reason I virtually quit social media entirely:
My Time.
Yes, my time. Because my time is worth a lot to me. A lot of money, and a lot of happiness.
The opportunity cost of wasting that time just is not worth it to me. If quitting social media means I get an extra hour a day working on one of my businesses or spending time with people I care about, then it is totally worth it. If I’m being honest, it is probably way more than an hour a day saved.
The only real strongly argued use case for social media is for marketing an existing product, service, or brand. This can enhance connections with your customers and enable you to connect with new customers.
I encourage you to be honest with yourself about your personal costs and benefits to using social media. In the meantime, write me an email I guess?
